Sudan's civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began in April 2023 with opening battles in the capital, Khartoum. The army has since recaptured Khartoum and its twin city Omdurman across the Nile, and broke an RSF siege of the North Kordofan capital El Obeid in February 2025, according to the Council on Foreign Relations' Global Conflict Tracker.
The RSF's position has consolidated in Darfur: the group took El Fasher, North Darfur's capital and the army's last major stronghold in the region, on October 27, 2025, after an eighteen-month siege. Fighting has also spread into South Kordofan, around Kadugli, hardening an emerging east-west front line between army-held and RSF-held territory. Port Sudan on the Red Sea has functioned as the wartime seat of Sudan's government and its main gateway for humanitarian and commercial shipping throughout the war.
The war has killed an estimated tens of thousands of people — with the true toll likely far higher given access restrictions on reporting — and displaced more than 10 million, one of the world's largest displacement crises, with famine conditions reported in parts of the country, particularly Darfur.
