Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, launched February 24, 2022, has settled into an attritional war along a roughly 1,000-kilometer front stretching from the Kharkiv region in the northeast down through the Donbas to Zaporizhzhia and Kherson in the south. Neither side has achieved a decisive breakthrough; front-line movement is now measured in individual villages and tree lines rather than large territorial shifts.
The Institute for the Study of War's daily assessments put Kharkiv, Kupiansk, Pokrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson city all under Ukrainian control as of early August 2026, though each remains under sustained Russian pressure — Pokrovsk in particular has been a focal point of Russia's slow-moving offensive for more than a year, and Kharkiv sits within range of Russian artillery and glide bombs from across the border.
Russia has controlled the Sea of Azov port of Mariupol since its capture in a months-long 2022 siege, and has administered Crimea, including the port of Sevastopol and headquarters of Russia's Black Sea Fleet, since a 2014 annexation not recognized by most of the international community. Ukraine's Black Sea grain-export lifeline runs through Odesa, a recurring target of Russian missile and drone strikes.
