Yemen's civil war, which escalated when Houthi forces (Ansar Allah) seized the capital Sanaa in 2014, has left the country split between two rival administrations. The Houthi movement controls Sanaa and the Red Sea port of Hodeidah — the country's main entry point for humanitarian aid — while the internationally recognized government, organized under the Presidential Leadership Council, is seated in the southern port city of Aden.
Front lines around Marib, an oil- and gas-producing city east of Sanaa, and Taiz, Yemen's besieged and divided third-largest city, have remained largely static for years even as sporadic fighting continues.
